Gweilo is the term that the Chinese (in Hong Kong and China back in the 1700-1800s) originally used to describe the white man. It literally translates into “ghost man.” Yes, technically it is racist but in the 1700-1800s what wasn’t. No properly educated family allows their children to use the term but we all used it regularly in Hong Kong. In fact it is really less “racist” than singling out someone as a “white man” which would sound rude in everyday conversation.
The “hokgwei” means “black ghost.”

Once I got on the train and sat across a Jewish guy; the stereotypical NY Jewish guy with the beard, hat, etc., who was sitting next to a guy that looked exactly like the textbook image of Jesus Christ; shoulder length black hair, moustache, goatie. I found it so amusing, I couldn’t stop smiling or thinking that after 2000 years this is where they meet again.
