That’s why the Village Voice sucks…their “coverage” is a total joke. The only people who read that rag are people who are new to the city and haven’t figured it out yet.
I stand up almost all the time in the subway, even when it’s empty. I don’t touch anything. It’s kind of a fun subway surfing challenge. I stand with my feet kind of wide apart and try to make it the entire trip without having to lean on anything or grab a handle. I read while I am doing this.
snappy- for what its worth, in this society men were told they should be polite to women (which may account for the passive/aggressive behavior expressed here) and open doors for them, or give up seats. Until the day we are taught that gender does not override social niceties, it will probably stay this way. But I have in fact seen young woman get up for a pregnant one, and also for an older person with a cane or injury.
