i have had some very good experiences with Moving Your Way, I think they are based in park slope. They are maybe Russian but I’m not sure, definitely from somewhere within the former Soviet Republic. I have used them around 4 or 5 times and relatives of mine have used them about 4 times as well. They didn’t do anything shady, they were totally professional, careful with my items, and actually personable too! The guy who I normally dealt with was Igor, he coordinated or something. Anyway, I highly recommend them.
gemini – as for tipping movers, i one time gave the guys from moving your way a couple of bottles of booze, in addition to a tip, since i didn’t have a lot of cash at the time. i also had a friend that once gave movers a laptop as a tip. what are you thoughts on things like that as tips?
“Chinese people burp all the time. It’s a cultural thing.”
Awhile ago you and M4L said Chinese don’t wait to let people out of elevators, subway cars, etc. before entering – yesterday I was nearly bowled over by a Chinese delivery guy coming into the elevator!
DH: the rule when I worked for a moving company about 7 years ago was $5-$10/man per hour
basically this:
if you have a standard move with 3 guys that has 30 boxes and 4 rooms of furniture I would give them $50 a man
if they have a 4 floor walk up to another 4 floor walk up and it’s 90 degrees and they are there helping you out and being super great $100 a man maybe even $150/man depending.
and ALWAYS offer the movers something to drink and please allow them to use your glassware
sorry, this is a sore subject as I grew up with movers as both my uncles owned moving companys and I just would hear all these horrible stories of how bad they were treated
and of course on the flip side, yes movers WILL hold your stuff if you refuse to pay and guess what, they actually are allowed to – it’s wrong, but they provided a service that now you aren’t willing to pay for…
Arkday – THANKS so much! next thursday, moving on Friday. I will them give you all a play by play of how livng in a condo turned rental is like….
I saw the comment yesterday, CG. I think burping in the face of someone blowing smoke in your face is an appropriate, even a measured, response.
The burb is not a hazard to someone else’s health, while the smoke, beyond the mental grasp and the belief of most smokers, is a serious health hazard. But we discussed all this yesterday.
DIBS – yesterday moreforless mentioned burping in the faces of smokers at bars as retaliation for second hand smoke. i was making a joke about that warranting an asskicking, since the thought of some stranger coming up to me in a bar and burping in my face for whatever reason has haunted me for the past day. seriously, that kinda thing is just uncalled for.

It was the “seriously, that kind of thing is uncalled for” remark that made me comment, CG. Were you on the side of the smokers, yesterday?
Pot= Kettle
lighten up DIBS.
I’ll be the first to say not to use Russian movers. Most are scam artists.
Good website is http://www.movingscam.com
