“I can still rememeber that awful buring rubber/electrical fire smell”
I’ll never forget the smell. You couldn’t keep it from permeating the house. I was standing on my roof with my tenants, with neighbors on their roofs as far as the eye could see, and we watched the 2nd plane hit and both Towers fall. My old secretary died in Tower 1, and I had a client escape from the 105th Floor of Tower 2 literally about 2 minutes before the plane hit she told me. And I’ll never forget the ash falling all over Brooklyn – like nuclear winter – and the paper; I have a folder full of paper that I picked up in the garden and on the stoop and sidewalk, mostly from high floors of Tower 2, which I’ll donate to the memorial museum when they finally build it.
Never forget the smell- even in BH where I lived at the time- it would wake me up in the middle of the night. But I was so proud of NYers like never before. I met so many truly incredible people down there – Also want to mention those of you who were down there that day or who went down afterwards for the clean up should be signed up for the WTC health monitoring program. I’m finally doing it in August. Lechacal, biff, ditto- have you signed up?
lechacal, thats a good decription. I once smelled that smell near a trash yard abroad (there was something burning in it). It gave me a very negative psychological aspect for a short while.
Snappy, I hope to come Thursday (if work does not prevent).
Etson, I didn’t know about First Saturdays — that sounds fun. As it happens, we have reservations Saturday for a tour at the Tenement Musuem. I am so excited. It’s something I’ve been meaning to get around to for years.
bxgrl, ch – What’s that? A new shipment of tiaras came in you say?!?!
biff- but I have tiaras 🙂

“Hey, hey, hey, take it easy there. Some of those “enablers” are your friends.”
Exactly. And a couple of we enablers recognize that certain PLUSA membership renewal dates are approaching, so you better watch out.

mopar, you are going to love the Tenement Museum tour! It’s wonderful. I’ve probably done it four times now (with various visiting family members).
“Pissed off I am not one of your enablers?? ”
