THL, I respect you as much as anyone here, and I happen to think you’re pretty cool besides. But my use of the word “likely” is (in my opinion) as subjective as your account of how the information was relayed to the police, so for you to assail me on that basis is disingenuous. Of course the police ask for descriptions. And what do you think Ms. Whalen said to them? While the fact is neither of us knows exactly what she said, I’m willing to bet that she said “A black man is trying to break into the house next door” which brought the cops RUNNING.
And, not only have I called the cops, but my dad (who’s deceased now) was in law enforcement, several of his best friends, including my next-door neighbor growing up in ENY, were cops, I worked with several guys who became cops while I was in college, and I even took the police test myself and passed with high marks, but opted not to join. I have a lot of experience with the police.
What I don’t get if that if she’s nosey enough to be looking at the window all day to see whats going on up and down the street that she’d never noticed Prof. gates entering his house before.
ENY, only idiots believe stuff like this doesn’t exist. Things will get better but it’ll always be there. We even get stupid sh*t treatment within our own race. Humans are just a funny, whacko, conceited,.. breed.
dh- I’ll give you she may not know Gates or recognized him. How I don’t know- he is surely high profile enough (and should especially be so to a university fundraiser. ) But a little common sense- luggage? cane? well dressed? coming out of a limo? Hello?
I remember the incident with the Hasidic cop- it was very different from what happened here. So again I’ll ask you- why was a Black man, in broad daylight with all indications that he was a professor coming home from a trip, to a neighborhood where he had lived for some time, be assumed to be a robber? When was the last time a robber drove up to a house by car service, had luggage, wore a blazer, and walked with a cane, break into a house in a fancy neighborhood? Never.
“without folks resorting to calling each other names and foaming at the mouth. ”
Snappy, You’re wrong. I read someone call someone Foam-green. That’s an insult to foam-green insects everywhere who want nothing to do with us humans!
Aw, gee, Cambridge police profile black men, and badly. I’m so shocked.

Good point, ditto! Exactly.
ok, DH- my stubborn pill is wearing off so I’m letting this topic go for the rest of the day. 🙂
“Still, I refuse to pretend such barriers no longer exist.”
They’re there. They’re absolutely undeniably there.
I just don’t think it’s the right thing to assert it as being the case in every instance.

ditto- by those lights I am so not genteel 🙂
