I used to be allergic as a child as well. Outgrew it once I got used to my cat.
Just make sure you never get in the habit of letting them on your bed and keep the door shut when you’re out. That’ll keep any dander off the bedding/pillows etc. That’s when you have the worst reaction to it I think, nighttime.
