Chungking Mansions has gotten quite hip lately, Dave, for a certain type of “adventuresome” gwailo. It’s not so dangerous anymore because it got notorious as a den for illegal immigrants, and now the police are all over it.
I don’t often have a reason to visit that neighborhod, but I have been to eat at Chungking Mansions once, at one of the “Clubs” for Indian food.
dh…some day I have to go through my old passports and count the number of times I’ve been to Thailand. I bet it’s pushing 90!!!!! A lot of weekends down there during the three year stay in HK.
Snappy, I agree with your post at 11:58. I don’t agree with those who would take your concerns lightly. They are perhaps well-meaning, nevertheless trivializing and denying your perceptions. I have been thinking of addressing it outright. Then you know that there will be much anger and hissing. The What is not the one with the anger problem here. Sigh, things are not how they seem on the surface. You watch, this small post may generate a bunch of hate. Well, now I am off to buy a book about finance. Snappy, answer me tomorrow, if not today. Anyway I’ll check the thread when I can.
ditto….I think Chunking Mansions held the entrance to hell.
Food in Thailand is fantastic. Not only Thai but also incredibly good western food as well. Best Italian meal I had in all of Asia was in Chang Mai. On old italian guy ran a restaurant called Piccolo Roma and made fresh pasta and bread. You can imagine the fish and seafood dishes.
The Sukhothai Hotel probably does the best spaghetti carbonara outside of Italy and the best turkey club in all of Asia. Their mango pancakes are heavenly
DH, it’s definitely a place to see at least once. I know DIBS jokes a lot about the sexual stuff, but I’m sure he would be the first to agree that the food is excellent, the people are incredibly friendly, the temples are incredible and the scenery (outside of Bangkok) is breathtaking.

Kowloon Walled City is gone. They bulldozed it in 1993. Now there’s nothing there but a park.
Nearby is Kowloon City, a neighborhood with lots of good Chiu Chow and Thai restaurants. If you come to Hong Kong when I’m there, I’ll take you.
“He really needs to get laid”
Or lay off whatever drug he’s obviously on.
DIBS, one of my stops was Chiang Mai. I can’t recommend it enough to anyone who goes to Thailand.
I think we should invite the What along. He really needs to get laid.

I wish I could go back!
