(We’re also beginning to decline in height, on average, Northern Europeans surpassing us because — ahem — they eat better and have better health care. Who’s the tallest of them all? Not Americans, as we used to be. It’s the Dutch! And this has happened in just one generation, according to an extended article in The New Yorker.)
Yes, Northern European countries tax people heavily, but add up all the out-of-pocket expenses Americans pay for health care, day care, elder care and raising kids (down to school clothes, which are covered in a place like Holland), we shell out the same amounts and more, and often for inferior services.
