insert – I don;t watch that show – but am SURE there are loads of tax issues these poor contestants never think about upon entering and then winnging (sorta like the free car giveaway Oprah did a few years back)
HGTV should just agree to pay additional taxes etc
I have to say HGTV annoys me altough I prob watch it 2-3 a week for various home buying/selling/design shows
My favorite is when a buyer is checking out houses and they are concerned about an old rug or the paint color as if that will be the deal breaker for them not to buy the house – it just makes me giggle. Imagine how they would fare looking at these old buildings here in BK?
So, I just wanted to find out if I’m the only ninny who didnt’ think about this…
Last night I was watching the HGTV Dream Home giveaway and got to wondering how many folks who win live in the house vs. sell it for the $$$. I then came across a thread on some blog about how that sweepstakes has ruined people because they are getting hit with huge tax bills for the full value of the prize (the house, all the furnishings, the land, the cash, and the car they receive as part of the package). I then read an article about the winners of the Dream Home built in Tyler, TX several years ago. They decided to move there and live in the 6000 sqft home but first had to take out a $672,000 loan to pay the taxes on the damned prize. At the time the article was published, the winners were trying to sell it and hoping to come out with at least 250K to pocket after all is said and done. I am never entering that contest again! It sounds like a nightmare. And on top of that, last year’s home built in Hilton Head SC was in a desolate area that had no other homes in it. By the time the winner was announced, only 2 or 3 other homes were just begining to be built nearby.

What was the name of the Southie kid in Infinite Jest that sold everyone drugs and (convienently) clean urine during drug testing?
You actually should have an “ignore” feature, hopefully by September…

Mr. What:
“BklynSoFar I know you came in from Wisconsin two months ago . . . ”
You have me LOL’ing and falling off my chair so much with that comment that I am having trouble following the original etymological argument.
Will have to get back to you when I sober up from laughing (and looking up how to spell the previous “e” word).
