  1. It’s pattern recognition, really. And yes, I’m one of those people that won’t use a q,x, z unless I’m getting 30+ points. And with the x I prefer getting closer to 50 on a triple letter square – ax/ox, ax, xi, xu etc.

  2. We should have a Brownstoner Scrabble Tournament. Snappy and I will bring the boards (I have the same one as Snappy). We’ll have two games going at the same time. We’ll crown a winner by night’s end.
If anyone wants to play with me, I’ll be in the corner with a deck of cards playing Go Fish.

  3. “If your really motivated try memorizing all the 2/3 letter words and all the small words you can make with Q,X,Z and only use them if you can score more then 30 pts.”

Wow…this is really a science. No wonder I’m so often outclassed!

Biff, I really like interacting with everyone here, but like SnarkSlope, I’m going to remain viral for now. Perhaps I’ll show up in the future, though. And thank you for asking me!

  4. “but I’m a writer and journalist! I should NEVER lose in Scrabble!! But she ALWAYS wins!”

ENY, someone told me this recently: Scrabble is more of a visual thing vs. a vocabulary thing.

And it’s proven true, my mom was in a writing profession, very bright, and had a huge vocabulary, and I KILLED her at Scrabble, every time. Likewise BH – who is a good 20-30 IQ points smarter than me loses to me all the time. He won’t play with me anymore. : (

I’m no genius, but I’m good at Scrabble – I’m a visual and puzzle person.
