The Post and The Brooklyn Paper report that no developers responded to the request for proposals to construct an enclosed soccer field on Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 5. It’s unclear whether this means that plans for the facility are completely dead. State Sen. Daniel Squadron is quoted in the Brooklyn Paper as saying that the “park has an obligation to build this bubble, and I believe that commitment will be kept,” but others contend that building and operating the facility wasn’t an attractive prospect for developers. Roy Sloane, president of the Cobble Hill Association, says the following: “[D]evelopers would have to put in a lot of money, have it open only four months a year, and charge very reasonable prices. Did that sound like something the city was serious about?” Other plans for Pier 5—which include three outdoor turf fields, an esplanade, and a picnic area—are still on track to be finished next summer.
