Take an Excursion on a Vintage Subway Car With the Return of Summer Nostalgia Rides

Another annual event is set to come back after a two-year hiatus: The return of the New York Transit Museum’s nostalgia rides will allow straphangers to once again hop aboard vintage subway cars for trips during the summer.

There are routes from Manhattan to the Bronx and Queens but the Brooklyn highlight is the two-hour jaunt to Coney Island aboard 1930s R1-9 train cars on Sunday, July 10. The train leaves Manhattan from the 96th Street station on the Q line at 10 a.m. Once in Coney Island, the usual summer attractions await along with a special New York Transit Museum exhibit at the Coney Island Museum called “Five Cents to Dreamland: A Trip to Coney Island.” If you want to join in on the return the same way, the train departs at 4 p.m.

The rides aren’t available for a swipe of a MetroCard. Tickets for the Coney Island excursion are $60 for adults and $40 for children with member prices at $40 and $30, respectively.
