We’ve been ordering take-out from Raga (142 Smith Street at Bergen) for years. It’s never been as good as our favorite spots in Queens or Manhattan or out on Long Island, but they deliver (if you can wait an hour or so), and they serve big portions for decent prices. But when we ordered from them last week, they surprised us with a spicy chana sag (chickpeas and spinach) that packed a lot more heat — and a lot more flavor — than usual. It’s the first time any neighborhood Indian food made us break a sweat, and we ate it happily, sipping a cooling mango lassi (and occasionally blowing our noses) between bites…

The tender lamb madras, which we had never ordered before, was cooked in a stew of tomatoes, onion, and herbs — and is something we’d definitely order again. The vegetable soup was thick and rich, if a bit salty, and the pakoras showed up warm and crisp, despite the extended delivery time. Anybody have another recommendation for above-average Indian food in Brooklyn?

  1. RAGA RAGA RAGA 2 years ago i tried them and that was my fave indian spot in brooklyn (actually the only one i had eaten at but i still love it) it was better than most places in Manhattan. every time i was in that area i had to go to Raga.

i live in Clinton Hill and i order delivery constantly from: India Place on Vanderbilt Ave., 718-398-7776. I’ve never eaten there in person.

so that is for you Rich Wood, a new place to try! they’re good for the most part! but not as good as Raga Cafe!

  2. Wow, that looks yummy. They are fairly average (better than Star Of India or Amin, for sure), but JOY on Flatbush has amazing Mulligtawny soup and quick delivery. They have a special for $25 too which comes with so much food, you’ll have plenty for days.
