It appears there will be a new bar on 20th Street and 6th ave in the same South Slope location that in the last year and a half has seen Bar B Q and Safe Haven go out of business. The bar will be right across the street from the classy Toby’s Pub and right next door to the restaurant Lot 2, which took the place of Kitchen Bar last summer. On the same block the brand new Lucali spin off Giuseppina’s is still in grand opening limbo and have their windows covered with the same newspapers clippings since November (did you hear the Yankees won the World Series?). Lying on a very secluded tree lined street with a gorgeous view of Green-Wood Cemetery, it seems only a matter of time before this little pocket is filled with upscale establishments; and possibly before the whole neighborhood becomes a second Park Slope. Ed: This is the first post from our neighborhood stringer program. We got such a huge response that it’s going to take a few more days to worth through. Thanks to everyone who expressed interest–we’ll be back to you soon.

  1. I think a solid cafe/bakery would do really well there

Bakery — try Laurentino’s, 5th Ave btwn 20th and 21st, west side of the street. The baker worked at Veniero’s in the East Village for over a decade. Great stuff, extremely reasonable prices. Try the Italian cheesecake — fantastic — and the cannolis.

Cafe — Has Beans, 5th Ave & ?? 17th? 18th? west side of the street. Nice vibe, free wifi. There are a couple of cafes nearby, but this is the one I’ve landed in most often.

  2. Bar B Q was neighborhood beer-slosh mecca. *Glistening teat* It’s owner still is the man; he wanted out of the bar business and rented it out to the Safe Haven tenants. Here’s hoping he gets some great tenants in that sweet cozy space.

  3. Slopefarm:
I wish we were still there – I sold my house in Sept (booo!)
but I agree with your take on that part of the nabe it’s not really “a scene” but it’s quiet and filled with all around good people – new and old owners

  4. We’re a block away from you, gemini. My take on Greenwood (“people are just dying to get in there” — rim shot) is that it is drawing the kind of folks that were drawn to the Slope 25 years ago when we first moved here. A mix of post-college and young families, not nearly as hipster-ish as WB and not looking for a scene, but not high-end business professionals. Half the folks in the Greenwood CSA show up with kids under 4. It’s a low-key community vibe and the Slope’s amenities are not far away.

  5. “second Park Slope”

If you don’t instinctively get this bit of writing, what they mean, then you’ve never been to this area in Greenwood Heights. It clearly doesn’t mean more brownstones etc. It means something else. See if you can figure it out.

  6. Who wrote this? A realitor with units to sell in the area?

“…possibly before the whole neighborhood becomes a second Park Slope.”

Huh? I’m a big fan of Greenwood Heights, and this stretch of 6th Ave, but gimme a break.

I’d ween this one of the roster Mr. B.
