A reader sent in this photo of a new bagel store prepping to open at 284 3rd Avenue in Gowanus. The name—Tony’s Bagelz—is a little painful but hopefully it won’t get in the way of doing a good business. GMAP

  1. so many haters….
first of all, the owner is the co founder of bagel delight and is a neighborhood fixture, knows everybody and wants to contribute to the community. I feel he is one of the few people who can do well in this location which has virtually no foot traffic.

Second, Have you ever eaten at crooked tail cafe? That place just plains sucks and has nothing unique to offer, let alone make a decent sandwich.

third,Tony will also offer groceries, milk and juice, and an ATM, things that you can get on this stretch of 3rd ave.

    Solidago,
the tree was trimmed so a new arbor can be built. the old one was too low and falling apart and the new one will allow adequate seating and shade. A specialist was found to determine the correct time to trim and prune. Most of the tree was spared, and a lot of branches were pushed to the fence.

Btw, this building had a wine press built into the foundation when I bought it. Legend has it that they made there own wine using the backyard grapes. Tony has done a great job fixing the place and I can assure you the food and outdoor seating will be great.

    Have a nice day.

  2. There was a beautiful, lush grape arbor in the backyard. For whatever reason they took the chainsaw to it, leaving nothing but a shadeless slab of concrete. And how many bagel and sandwich places are needed on one block in Gowanus?

  3. Heh. Well, “la bagel delight” is a pretty silly name, and that place does ok.

That said, Chicken is right, I don’t really see an unfilled need for bagels here. Seems like there are a lot things they could have tried here that wouldn’t have had 3 competitors (including Brownstone) within a block.
