  1. The article seems to mention a mix of oldtimers and newcomers. The guy who put a lock on himself and patrolled with his rottweiler? I’ll wager he’s not a newcomer for instance (my pet theory is oldtimers have balls and newcomers call 311 but that’s just a theory).

  2. I take issue with the assumption that only newcomers with money to a neighborhood care about the drug dealers and hookers in the park. I’ll bet people in the neighborhood have been complaining for years but no one was listening. You’re very much if you think only white people with money and gentrifyiers are the only ones who ever tried to fix these problems.

  3. @Brownstones_Half_Off:

How can you compare these two situations?

Tishman Speyer/Blackrock lost money because they tried to increase rents or evict rent controlled tenants at Stuy Town. The people in this article are just trying to improve their neighborhoods by removing crackheads and prostitutes who are breaking the law.

The people who first moved into certain areas of brownstone brooklyn did well by doing just that. Bought a brownstone, took care of the building, invested time and energy into the neighborhood. I don’t see how you can possibly frownstone on that.

  4. Startling complaints like this do have an effect. I suspect this is the same group which got the neighboring crack/whore house Lefferts Hotel shut down. Of course ultimately the “unsavory” elements will only be less visible with an a increase of legitimate users of the park. Perhaps when the project diagonally across Fulton is finished and the new apartments on Fulton towards Franklin open this really problematic corner will freshen upI As is it really is a dead zone at night. That said, I suspect BHO is right (!) and the vacant lots etc won’t be dealt with until this economic downturn ends. I just don’t think that justifies maligning those (who may live in the neighboring low-income apartments, be renters, be owners who bought at low prices or high prices) who take a concern with their neighborhoods. But hey, that’s not your point, is it BHO?

  5. From reading this article it doesn’t seem like its the million dollar brownstone buyers exclusively doing the complaining. It certainly would be nice to have this park cleaned up. During the day its a decent playground and my children go there a bunch during the summer. But at night it definitely has an unsavory element, no two ways around it.
