pub
Fort Greene isn’t known for being particularly Irish but the owners of the soon-to-open Mullame’s Bar & Grill are betting that residents will want to eat and drink in a pub-like atmosphere. It makes some sense to us: There are surprisingly few places in the immediate area that offer a good selection of on-tap beers and inexpensive grub. And they’ve picked a great corner at Lafayette and South Elliott. The proprietors have undertaken a fairly ambitious renovation that’s included a great deal of work to the exterior, including restoration of the first-floor cornice. If only the bagel store next door looked as good.

  1. That’s the wonderful thing about sports: they tend to unify a “variety of people who live in the neighborhood”. Black, white, old, young, male, female, most people enjoy one sport or another. Add alcohol into the mix and you’ve got a winning formula.

I’ve noticed that on these boards people tend to trash every new place that opens. No one ever seems happy and everyone loves to bitch.

By the way, I love Blimpie’s and consider it a welcome addition to the neighborhood.

  2. It’s at S. Elliot, not S. Portland.

Nay to the TVs, yeah to getting an interesting beer selection. There do seem to be an awful lot of bad choices in the Ft. Greene commercial space arena over the last few years…Blimpie’s being at the top of the list. Ft. Greene needs an interesting, lively pub that serves good food at reasonable prices and caters to the variety of people who live in the neighborhood (i.e., something a little more sophisticated than a Park Slope-type sports bar). Plus, I’m a bit skeptical after they had their “Watch the World Cup Here” banner draped across the plywood throughout and well after the headbutt.

  3. nothing Irish about this place… I ducked in on Saturday night on my way home from somewhere else and was surprised to see it open. Sparse crowd, loud music, flatscreen TV’s behind the bar. Nice-looking fixtures, beer selection didn’t seem exceptional. Needs an identity.

  4. I just walked by and checked the menu. It was standard bar fare. Only quirk was that they used the BAM name to try to leverage their proximity (had a “BAM Burger” or something like that).
