norah-jones-house-1209.jpgThe Brooklyn Paper reports new developments in the Norah Jones’ great window scandal of 2009. First, it turns out that the famous singer’s designer originally applied to punch three new windows in the brick side wall but that it was Jones herself who pushed to modify the Landmarks application to add a total of ten windows. Second, the Cobble Hill Association, which has been up in arms over the LPC’s approval of the request since it was made public, has counted up the number of similar houses with windowless side walls that it says are all vulnerable if the Jones precedent is allowed to stand. The tally? 70.

  1. “There’s already president for allowable egg-throwing.”

Which president, Dave? Biff? Does Biff allow his constituents to throw eggs, or are we permitted to throw eggs at him?

As to the matter at hand, the neighbors are just jealous because they, too, can’t add side windows, which will simultaneously flood her maison with light and increase its market value (at least until the house on the corner erects 4-story clothes lines in front of her windows).

  2. “SO WHAT??????? What’s so wrong with windows in the sides of buildings???”

    Seriously.

I have a problem with anyone who has a problem with a homeowner putting in a window on the side of their home.

Just because the window wasn’t put there in 1908 doesn’t mean the sun can’t still shine in in 2009.

  3. DIBS, I think you mean precedent. But I agree. Can’t imagine landmarking was meant to preserve discolored and unfinished masonry side walls. I’m not sure what the harm is, other than perhaps to the privacy of next door neighbors, but we have laws governing property line windows.

  4. “Norah Jones maintains a punishing touring schedule, playing upwards of 250 gigs a year here and abroad. She is often booked to close large-scale, open air events and festivals in countries like Scotland, Australia, Spain, and Brazil, often performing before 80,000+ people in football stadiums.”

This is basically like aerial spraying of prozac in major population centers. As soon as she stops touring people will snap out of it and wars will break out.

  5. I saw her play for free in Battery Park a few years ago. I complained the entire time and I think I eventually got permission to go to the White Horse Tavern on Bridge Street to wait out the show.
