Closing Bell: Bill for Dumbo Film Shoots

It must be the month of moratoriums. At last night’s CB2 meeting Council Member Steve Levin said he is working on a bill dealing with the constant movie shoots in Dumbo. (A few days ago Brooklyn Paper interviewed residents complaining about said shoots.) The bill would suspend alternate side parking on blocks adjacent to a film shoot. And while he called for a full-out filming moratorium in Dumbo, he wasn’t sure that would be put into action. He’s also pushing for a rising fee to shoot on location…the increased movie fee was previously mentioned by Levin when he proposed alternative funding for Brooklyn Bridge Park earlier this month.

tybur, you really are a problem when we are trying to split up the world into car owners vs bike owners. Can’t you just ditch one or t’other?
dh — you know my feelings about transportation alternatives (if you forget, strong). I have a car. If there were permanent, positive things that made owning a car more difficult, I’d probably get rid of my car. I’d probably actively support many of them.
However, this shooting is temporary and disruptive.
ALSO, I’ll add… I live in Ditmas Park. There isn’t even paid parking alternatives. When a “Queen Latifah” project took over a couple years ago… they took over 6 square blocks AND it was street cleaning days!! That’s an enormous amount of cars with nowhere to go!
I ended up parking on the front lawn of my house with my landlord. And then had to drive down the sidewalk to get out the next day.
I contemplated just letting them tow (the whole, “We’ll tow your car to the nearest legal spot.”) But I don’t know if that’s true… if they’d fuck up my car… or even keep track where they parked it in Marine Park or East New York.
Gotta say, when rob is right, he’s right.
The TV & movie guys, caterers and actors in Greenpoint usually turn up on their bikes
“I’m beginning to realize people in Brooklyn are against whatever takes away free parking”
DING DING DING!!!
You should walk by a film shoot a few times in case they run out of actors and need you to join in.
Make sure you walk by when the director or leads are there and try to get their attention. They will be impressed by you and offer you a role in the film.
I have lived and parked my car in DUMBO for 4 years. Film shoots are to be expected and I get a kick out of telling friends about stars hanging in my neighborhood. The problem lately is the frequency of the shoots (feels like back to back) along with loosing between 14 and 20 parking spots due to construction and new loading areas along Front St towards Vinegar Hill. Add to that crazy vandals, mad tow trucks and cars with out of state license plates that like to take up two spots instead of one. Makes parking tough.
All of these factors make the film crews an obvious target to exert control over. The last time I looked DUMBO is prime for its views and it happens to be 1 stop away from the city, not because of the film crews. Parking is $375 in my building and frankly I don’t have that kind of scratch…and why would I when parking is available on the street?
I am a full time resident and why would I not want preference to film crews? Remember, this community is doing the crews a courtesy, and if its not viewed as such then that makes us paying residents doormats. Frankly if the crews up and left forever DUMBO would still be cool DUMBO.
I really have to wonder where some of my fellow posters are coming from? I am your neighbor full time ,not for two disruptive days. If you were considering the issue fully I believe you might see both sides.

i live in cobble hill and we have this problem too, though maybe not as bad. the complaint isn’t “omg there are constant film shoots make them stop!!!!” — it’s just that it would be nice if alternate side parking could be suspended on days when whole blocks become tow zones because of a film shoot.
