It must be the month of moratoriums. At last night’s CB2 meeting Council Member Steve Levin said he is working on a bill dealing with the constant movie shoots in Dumbo. (A few days ago Brooklyn Paper interviewed residents complaining about said shoots.) The bill would suspend alternate side parking on blocks adjacent to a film shoot. And while he called for a full-out filming moratorium in Dumbo, he wasn’t sure that would be put into action. He’s also pushing for a rising fee to shoot on location…the increased movie fee was previously mentioned by Levin when he proposed alternative funding for Brooklyn Bridge Park earlier this month.

  1. No you STFU!! What, just ’cause we live in a decent neighborhood we shouldn’t expect to be able to park our cars on our streets??? That’s just plain stupid. I’m sick of the mayor selling our hoods and backdrops for hollywood, to line him and his friends pockets, while we the residents are inconvenienced and robbed of our right to a peaceful existance. We live in these places, take care of the streets and gardens in front of our houses, this is our home. To have the city kick us out of our parking spaces, tow our vehicles away, and film crews and equipment block our sidewalks. And as far as the local economy, they truck in their food and supplies, and buy very little from the local businesses. And, on top of it all, they’re the RUDEST people I’ve even encountered. I wish they would just go away and leave us Brooklyn folks to live in peace.

  2. a simple solution is just suspend the alternate, thats all. problem solved…. but no, heaven forbid man should ever make anything easy for man…………….

sometimes the human race is sickening, and to think, we create all this madness………………….

  3. these film types are too much. they are terrified of black neighborhoods so they only film in white neighborhoods.
where did Tyler Perry shoot his latest film “For Colored Girls”? yes, in Brooklyn Heights.

  4. Lived and parked in DUMBO for the past 4 years. Problem lately is the combination of recently reduced (by 14-20) available spots due to construction and business zones, window bashers, rabid tow trucks/parking maids and drumroll……the frequency of shoots that extend along Front St. to Vinegar Hill. It is feeling like the shoots are back to back.
The filming gets old when you can’t get into your own building. DUMBO is hot not because of the filming. It is hot because it is one stop away from the city and it happens to have a vibrant bunch of people. I live here 24/7 and consider it a courtesy from the community that filming goes on….if that is not the case then we are just human doormats. If all filming in DUMBO ended tomorrow DUMBO would survive.Parking in my building runs $375 and is booked up. I cannot afford that. Why would I not want to park for free on the street?
What disturbs me the most is my fellow posters and neighbors. I am your neighbor. This city is damn tough as it is without the venom. Hmmmm… ” filming in my neighborhood, disrupting parking for something that ultimately does not matter so I can feel good about having stars walking around” or…..”reasonable parking for a neighbor who can”t afford to pay for it.” Would you not want consideration for yourself or a relative in the same situation?

  5. quote:
“Queen Latifah” project took over a couple years ago… they took over 6 square blocks

and her booty was 5 of those blocks, no?… <3 the Queen! i got to be in her audience for that talk show she had a looooooooong time ago, she is an awesome woman.

  6. Yes – Rob is right that people who complain about film shoots in their charming neighborhoods need to STFU. Moratoriums on film shoots is a horrible idea. Suspending alternate side parking regulations when a film shoot is going on, however, is a reasonable request that should probably be accommodated. Film shoots are a large driver of economic activity in this City, and City counsel should not have any say in how much they get charged or how many there are without an in depth understanding of how those changes would affect the economy.
