Yesterday afternoon Concilwoman Tish James led about a dozen activists on a march over the Brooklyn Bridge to protest the city’s plan to move a homeless intake shelter from Manhattan to Crown Heights, according to the Daily News. The march ended at City Hall, where State Senator Eric Adams and Councilman Lew Fidler spoke out against the plan. “The entire city should share the burden of the…less fortunate,” said Adams, who says he’s going to bring the fight against the center’s move to Albany.

  1. Dave- you took that Audubon class! I didn’t see you there, did I?

Actually, I believe that it’s when you look at the bird the building kills it- kind of a Schroedingers Cat kind of thing. (And someone needs to tell him to keep the cat in his own yard).

  2. You mean if they didn’t die or wind up in the hospital because of heat prostration? Are you a doctor? Because each of those diseases is not caused by physical inactivity but a host of genetic, dietary and environmental factors, of which one may be lack of exercise,as a contributing factor, but not a cause.

However, those into weight training could attach 5 lb weights to the poles holding the signs and kill 2 birds with one stone.

Not to nitpick, but I would think daily walks across the Brooklyn Bridge would do wonders to help people with high blood pressure, diabetes, or heart disease.

The vast majority of incidents of those diseases are caused by physical inactivity. A 2-mile walk up a moderate incline is perfect exercise for such people!

  4. Another factor being overlooked is the walk across the bridge. The length of that bridge is nearly two miles and some of the area’s older residents who have health problems like high blood pressure, diabetes, or heart disease may have opted out for that reason. Holding a rally in front of the shelter was much more sensible.

  5. There was a better attended rally at City Hall even before the one a couple of weeks ago in front of the armory. I agree, a work day is not a good time for a march across the bridge. I had to work, as did almost everyone I know. Which goes to show that Crown Heights certainly is made of working people, regardless of some of the remarks made here to the contrary.

This issue is important to our community, and won’t fade away. The will is there. Large demonstrations are not the only way to show that. Getting petitions and letters signed and sent to City Hall, gathering names and addresses of those who are committed to being there when we really need to make a physical statement is equally important. Doing all of the invisible work to get the community aware and involved doesn’t show up in the news, but gets the job done.

And for the last time, this has nothing to do with NIMBY, unless you are referring to Manhattan.

  6. I know, guest. What I really hate is when they have a real issue and real support but they waste it on incoherent, and disconnected kinds of protests- walk across the bridge? What does that do? The Bridge isn’t even close to Crown heights? It’s just a poor attempt at trying to get attention and it does nothing for the issue or for those of us who are putting in time and money to fight this thing.

And too many politicians make the mistake of thinking they have the charisma and chops to pull it off. I have every respect for tish and the pols who are helping- but they need to know how to organize people. 12 people walking across the bridge in protest is an embarrassment and says a lot about how not to stage a protest.

Sorry for venting. Mini-protests aren’t what get the job done. It’s a lot of hard work and planning and the outreach has to be done more than a week in advance. the timing made no sense, and depending on email for outreach won’t get you much.
