Yesterday afternoon Concilwoman Tish James led about a dozen activists on a march over the Brooklyn Bridge to protest the city’s plan to move a homeless intake shelter from Manhattan to Crown Heights, according to the Daily News. The march ended at City Hall, where State Senator Eric Adams and Councilman Lew Fidler spoke out against the plan. “The entire city should share the burden of the…less fortunate,” said Adams, who says he’s going to bring the fight against the center’s move to Albany.

  1. I was yesterday. There were closer to 20 people on the walk–still no great shakes, but we were escorted by police and accompanied by several camera crews and newspaper journalists (Channel 7, Channel 12, the Daily News…). People driving in cars noticed and honked and cheered. People walking by signed letters and took fliers.

Those who couldnt make the walk were invited to join on the City Hall steps, where there was a really good showing for a weekday of about 75 people.

Sometimes things need to get done to get the attention of the 9-5 lawmakers and the press. And other times we can have larger gathering on weekends. There is a a multi-pronged approach to stopping this plan–at the City and State level. If this one rally were it, it wouldn’t be enough.

For those who want to do something, email me (crownheightsrm@gmail.com) or visit the CHRM website (www.revitalizecrownheights.org). We have other rallys coming up, are working on a letter-writing campaign, and are regularly meeting with elected officials and government officials.

  2. “12:36- I guess you can’t read. I posted that under bxgrl and as for the rest- what makes you think I haven’t?”

And I guess you can’t differentiate from an Internet name and your real identity. For all intents and purposes, “Bxgrl” is virtually anonymous, OK?

But nevermind that. Let’s hear something (anything?) about the protest you’re planning, you know, the one that’s better than the one described in the original post.

Hey dave- I guess you know who that is (W,tsb)?

    We’re in for a long day 🙂

  4. Polemicist, I agree with you, but my above statement pertained to attendance at this particular rally. If someone already has diabetes or high blood pressure and has not exercised in years, if ever, than walking across the bridge to prove a point would be ill advised. Again, I suspect that aspect of this event turned at least some people away.

  5. “What I really hate is when they have a real issue and real support but they waste it on incoherent, and disconnected kinds of protests- walk across the bridge? What does that do? The Bridge isn’t even close to Crown heights?”

You’re pretty good at complaining anonymously and letting everyone know what you “hate.” But instead of taking shots at the people who led this protest, why don’t you just organize and lead a better one? Maybe it’s easier said than done?
