say-no-to-shelter-111710.jpgThe homeless shelter proposed for Greenpoint has seen its share of controversy since word leaked out on the blog New York Shitty back in early August. Not surprisingly, a lot of locals weren’t thrilled with the idea of a couple hundred homeless men getting imported into their nabe and now Councilman Steve Levin has weighed in on the matter. According to the Brooklyn Paper, Levin sent a formal statement to Department of Homeless Services earlier this week saying Unfortunately, the proposed shelter does not seek to address the homeless population in Greenpoint, but rather will introduce 200 more homeless men to the neighborhood. Levin also thinks the site is too isolated from amenities on McGuinness Boulevard. Not helping its cause, the proposed operator, HELP USA, skipped out on the public hearing that Community Board 1 tried to arrange to discuss the matter.

  1. In this context: the Heisman Trophy is a bronze of a football player giving a stiff arm.
So Levin ‘giving the Heisman’ refers to his attempt to fend off of the homeless shelter.

(it’s awarded every year to the best player in college football)
