Disappointingly, there was no Japanese Market in the cards for Vanderbilt Avenue. But there’s hope in Williamsburg: The sign on the door of this storefront at 167 North 9th Street advertises a Japanese mini market called Midoriya. The sign also promises it will be “Coming Soon!!” GMAP

  1. Taro was good, they have a better selection of sushi because they are actuall japanese owned and managed…two of the sushi chefs were japanese.

The pieces were on the small size but I’m expecting that to change next week after I put money in the tip jar and was chatting them up. besides, i got a look of approval when I ordered the natto.

Alas, except for one of the delivery guys there was no great eye-candy, especially behind the sushi bar and, as we all know, that’s how you pick your favorite places.

Prices weren’t bad and it had a good sake list, including a v.g. one from Niigata, where the best sake comes from.

  2. There’s another issue that will keep the “collective” east from surpassing the West. They all hate each other. We may make fun of UEUROTRASH and despise the french but we don’t hate each other like everyone hates Japan and China hates Korea and Korea hates China, etc, etc, etc.

The Japanese won’t import cheaper labor for their healthcare needs because they deem those people “dirty.”

  3. here is my list:
    – Saporo
    – short grain rise (but you can get it from any large chinese or korean store).
    – precooked unagi/onagu and unagi sauce
    – sushi rise mix sauce
    – sesami seed oil
    – sheets of seaweed
    – Penko
    – tonkatsu sauce
    – curry
    – fresh fish
    – Giant Pocky sticks
    – mochi ice cream
    – frosen Goiza
    – rice cookers
    – 207F water dispensers.
