It Seems Everyone is Still Pissed About the Snow!

No doubt you’ve already seen the vid above, and it’s likely you’ve experienced in real life the hassles and, perhaps, destruction the blizzard caused. So the questions coming out of local blogs as well as the papers are: 1. Is this a case of straight-up class warfare, wherein Manhattan has been favored in terms of snow removal at the expense of outer boroughs such as Brooklyn? 2. Even if that’s true, isn’t that more or less business as usual? 3. At the most extreme end of the spectrum, can deaths be attributed to the fact that the city appears to have been unprepared for the blizzard? 4. And, finally, does Mayor Bloomberg deserve the bulk of the blame if one considers the city’s response lacking? Several City Councilpeople are definitely jumping on this bandwagon.
Right, Bob, I remember the Lindsay fiasco. They never plowed Queens. But then Lindsay started off his term with multiple disasters. This is not the end of the world.
And class warfare? Gabby!
you would all make bad canadians
Class warfare? No I don’t think so. But they didn’t do the best job. Doherty admitted that they didn’t get started early enough. In 1 week, this will be 75% gone and we will be wading through corner lakes. The councilmen are ranting because it is their job to rant. So after this is all over, hopefully, they will do a post mortum and figure out how to deploy resources better for the next 3 foot snowstorm.
If that’s true, it will come out, mopar. I agree with Arkady, this is the worst response I can remember since the early 80s.
A snow plow came down my block [Midwood, bet. Bedford & Rogers] at about 8 this morning, got stuck,
backed out, and left a wall of snow blocking the street about 175′ east of
Bedford 🙁
When I walked home from a neighbor’s house at about 10 last night I saw someone
with his car in the street digging in front of it. I was awakened at about 6 AM
by what looked like the same guy, still digging, and arguing with someone. When
I looked out again, a short time later, he had made it off the block. My first
thought was that he was crazy, but maybe not. In any case, his escape route is
now blocked by the nice snow barricade the Sanitation Dept. was kind enough to
build.
The hyper-articulate commentary is what makes the video so special.
It certainly is a helluva mess out there.
Good to know, Dave.
We finally had a plow go down Pacific street, yesterday sometime, but only once, so far. Hopefully today, they’ll do at least a couple more passes. Headed out today to see what’s up in the neighborhood.
Sanitation=snowplow drivers
No, Manhattan is still not cleared either.
The city response has been totally unacceptable. People have died because emergency workers could not respond.
The problem is two-fold:
One, the mayor should have declared a state of emergency to keep non-essential vehicles from clogging the roads.
Two, the sanitation dept was down 500 workers out of about 1700 (now about 1200) because 500 were laid off. This is what the head janitor/maintenance man at my work says.
