We’d originally relegated this story to the Daily Links post, but it’s too good not to have its own post…Apparently one of the owners of the popular coffee spot Gorilla Coffee at 97 Fifth Avenue in Park Slope rubbed the employees the wrong way so they all banded together and quit en masse, throwing the Park Slope ecosystem into disequilibrium. Evidently there are all sorts of signs posted out front with a running he-said-she-said account of the problem. From a reader: “My husband said there was line outside the door of people just freaking out and totally in crisis over the lack of coffee. I have a feeling he was one of them because I was on the other line when he called to tell me this, and he told my secretary that it was an emergency.” We also hear that Gorilla addicts have been depleting supplies at neighboring stores to ride out the current crisis. We’d be mighty appreciative if someone could send in some photos of the storefront and posted screeds…

I still can’t believe the owners didn’t sense that this whole thing was brewing.
When I was a teenager, I worked as a delivery and clean-up boy for a local butcher shop in Gravesend. The proprietor was a close friend of my father, who was often at my folk’s place, and he liked me too.
When he was in that shop, however, his personality went through a complete transformation. He was an absolute tyrant, and he refered to me, as he did all the boys in my position, as “sonny”. For the 3 hours after school that I worked there, all I heard was his barking orders at me: “Sonny, move your a$$ and clean those butcher blocks NOW”.
My father thought it was a good lesson for me in the ways of the world.
honestly, after starbucks, this is imo the most over rated over hyped coffee joint/brand there is. i find their coffee well subpar, tastes burned instead of smooth. at least starbucks has some nice sweet treats. i do like their branding tho, they did a good job developing their logo. from a marketing stand point, i’d rather give a porcelain mug from gorilla coffee as a gift rather than starbucks, but i’ll take starbucks coffee anyday before gorilla.
in the hood, my fav coffee joints: cafe regular and castillo de jagua (best cafe con leche you’ll get in prospect heights/park slope, hands down)
We need to find a role to be played by Al Cappuccino.
“throwing the Park Slope ecosystem into disequilibrium.”
Probably true.
Service (like their coffee) is bitter! I say good riddance.
The coffee is consistently strong, and consistently priced (can’t say that about any of the other PS coffee joints). I like the loud music, it prevents people from yapping on their cel phones!
That said, I make my coffee at home. $2/day on coffee adds up to over $700/year, people.
“I only had a salad for dinner last night.”
Not too mention, you made a whole lotta espressos for yourself without any gratitude.
Jaysus, Biff, that “purse” is crazy… what the hell could she be carrying around?!
