Honk if You're Not Down With Walmart

The group Walmart Free NYC released a study that, according to the Daily News, says Walmart’s designs on East New York would result in a gridlock nightmare. The article notes: “The report predicted that if the planned Gateway II shopping center included a Walmart, it would draw 10,692 more cars every weekday than the mall’s developers predicted in their environmental study. That’s a 32% jump in traffic, they said….All the new vehicles would slow traffic by 29% on the already congested Shore Parkway, the study found.” No word on whether the group is conducting a similar study about how a ShopRite might affect the area. Meanwhile, Gateway II developer the Related Companies tells the newspaper that the study is poppycock. In other Walmart-is-coming news, an article in Crain’s brings word of the following: “Walmart has reached a deal in principle with the Building and Construction Trades Council of Greater New York that guarantees union workers will construct or renovate any stores that the retailer opens in the city during the next five years. The deal is a coup for Wal-mart Stores Inc., which faces stiff opposition from grocery and retail unions worried that the retailer’s entry into the New York City market will put downward pressure on the salaries of their members.”

Good!! I like Wal-mart and I will shop there, I also will be happy with a huge parking lot that I can park my truck in. Yay !!
I don’t know why all the haters, if you don’t like it don’t shop there…it really is a no brainer….
I don’t think traffic will be effected that much to cause an uproar…
Ikea in Red Hook hasn’t cause traffic jams that some idiotic people said would happen…………..
“everu single Walmart I’ve ever been in is far nicer and far more well stocked than any of the Atlantic Mall crap, including target”
True, but that’s faint praise indeed and doesn’t mean my description is inaccurate.

“Solution to snobbery issue:
Le Walmart”
ROFLMMFAO, Legion. But sooooo true. If Wal-Mart were French but otherwise the exact same store it is now all of the tofu humpers would be falling over themselves to shop there.
Like IKEA…same crap, also made in China, with a Scandinavian name on it. Only difference is they sell meatballs instead of hot dogs
Wal-Mart takes the rap for all movement of manufacturing to China, but the fact is that it has also happened in market segments where Wal-Mart is either not a big player or does not compete with other stores on price.
Liberals tend to love Apple and will buy any piece of shit that Steve Jobs can crap out, not caring that Apple produces it all in Chineese sweatshops while having profit margins much higher than Wal-Mart.

Apparently medical research has proven that anti-WalMart views are directly traceable to sexual impotence. I know, kind of weird, but totally true.

You people need to spend some time outside of Brooklyn.
Benson and Legion are right. Bringing a Wal Mart here will add to the collection of successful big-box retailers at the Gateway development, and increase the choices available to the surrounding neighborhoods.
The complex is also a housing success, as Legion notes. Bringing Wal Mart in will also bring jobs, which are sorely needed EVERYWHERE in NYC, union or non-union. Not much downside to a Wal Mart arrival from where I sit.
I used to dislike Walmart because everything was outsourced off shore. Now a substantial percentage of their goods is made in USA. The store serves a good purpose in many places but a lot of the arguments against them are true. NYC is big enough that I don’t think it would damage mom & pops. Lowe’s & HD haven’t closed down neighborhood hardware stores. Barnes & Noble has had a much larger impact on local business.
