A tipster sent us this photo and noted, “Looks like Greenwood Heights will be getting some kind of decent size organic store.” The commercial space below the the Bisney Condo, now a rental building, is getting leased to a place called ‘Earth’s Basket.’ Psyched? GMAP

  1. snappy, btw, you don’t like either fish store on 7th near 3rd Street? Not exactly close but closer than Fairway, and generally competitive. Hell, I’d go to Chinatown (either one) before Fairway.

  2. Yeah Greenwood, since i moved here in Dec 2007, we’ve gotten Lot 2, Ten, Union Market, Fonda, Thistle Cafe, that bistro on PPW and Prospect, the Euro place on 5th and 20th, a few coffee designer coffee shops if you’re into that, that cupcake joint on 5th, and I’m sure I’ve forgotten a few. Real dump over here, lol.

  3. **please be good and worth my money**

Agree with Denton wrt the fish. I’m tired of doing the Fairway thing for fish. And, hopefully it won’t be to fancy schmancy and have some regular grocery staples. I love my Fresh Direct, but in between deliveries, it gets a little old heading down to 9th Street or to Atlantic Center. (You can’t pay me to shop at Eagle)

  4. Funny- I sent this in too. Guess that proves that people in the neighborhood are indeed psyched. Esp. those of us that live in such a bad location. Given the waits in line to go up the stairs at the Prospect Ave R stops, it seems to me that there are a lot more of us bad locationers than there used to be.

This is directly across 17th street from the Manhattan bound R train entrance. It’s across 4th ave from the Brooklyn bound R train entrance. It’s directly in the path of the pedestrian scrum that leaves the R train every night and walks across 4th ave, and up the hill towards 5th avenue. You can argue that greenwood heights, itself, is a terrible location, but if you’re looking to capture the population that lives there, I don’t think there is a better locale.

This space could have been any number of things, and the most likely outcome was a vacant building with no lights on. Even if I never shop there, this is a good addition.

  5. Organic fruits and vegetables are less important because as long as you eat the FDA amount, you’re fine.

For processed products of all kinds it’s ideal because it avoids unnecessary fillers and preservatives.

And organic milk doesn’t spoil as fast as regular milk.

  6. hey all, I sent that in, never thought about car exhaust, if I did I wouldn’t have lived all those years off of 4th. Of course this is a modern building with filtered central air.

Hope they have a fish dept, that’s what we really need!

  7. Have to agree with guikazoid…bad location. Car exhaust, cars racing to make the light to get onto the expressway (watch out shoppers) and just yuck.

However, something is better than nothing and it is one block from the R train on an undeserved part of the ‘hood, unless you want to hike uphill to 5th Ave.

Wait, that’s not so bad of a walk or amenities, so I guess “whatever.” Best of luck to them.

  8. shhhhh dave. dont let the secret out of the bag.. just keep ripping off the rubes. one of the problems with organic fruits and vegetables is that often too many dirty hands touch it.
