After word of Grimaldi’s demise spread like wildfire yesterday, The Brooklyn Paper did some old-fashioned reporting and called up the popular pizzeria’s outspoken owner for his take on the news that his landlord was seeking to evict him over $44,000 in back rent and reimbursements. (The Post and The Daily News now put that number at close to $60,000.) I don’t owe her any rent [as the Wall Street Journal reported], Ciolli said. We’re waiting until Friday to give the landlady whatever the total is.” In the same interview, though, Ciolli almost seemed to dare the landlord to give him the boot. What are they gonna do, move in another pizzeria? he said. It’s not gonna be Grimaldi’s. They’re gonna have an empty store.” The owner of Pete’s Downtown restaurant at the end of the block put the whole kerfuffle into perspective. This guy doesn’t actually wanna leave, and with this kind of cash, the landlord doesn’t really want him to leave either. He’ll pay up. A court date is set for tomorrow.

I’m sure he is typical of the people you would associate with. Like I said, you have a lot in common with the ghetto people you so often deride. Class all the way.

  2. Why wait until a court date is set to pay up? Why not just pay the rent on time or is he gaining interest on the money else where? Sounds like a asshole to me.Just because he CAN be one.

  3. Wait, takeout is the same line as sitting in now? Guess I’m permanently done with Grimaldi’s then…:( I really like the pizza, but it’s definitely not worth those kind of lines. Up until a couple of years ago you could at least go at odd hours, like 3PM, and get in for a seat pretty quickly. Then they started having 24-7 lines, so we’d just get a pie to go and eat in the park, particularly easy if you called ahead. But a couple weekends ago we tried doing that and got no answer by phone–and I guess now I know why…

all you have to do in housing court is give a good sob story… even as something as ridiculous as leaky sinks and toilets that dont flush that good. and WIN!

sucks for the landlords, but awesome for tenants who want to not pay their rent for YEARS.

  5. Going against the naysayers here, I always found the pizza pretty damn good…and always made sure to show up early to avoid a long line.

Nothing better than filling up on crispy pepperoni pizza, walking 100 yards to see the skyline and topping off with ice cream from the Brooklyn Icecream Factory.
