The humongous new rock-climbing facility on 3rd Avenue and Degraw Street, Brooklyn Boulders, is slated to open on August 3rd. To recap: The gym, which is an old Daily News garage, has 30-foot ceilings and will have a bunch of different climbing options, including a top-rope climbing area and a replica of a Brooklyn Bridge tower to hoist onto. While the business will start welcoming climbers in a couple weeks, its grand opening shindig isn’t happening until September 9th. Click through the photos for a taste of what it’ll be like.

*rob*
I would so love to try this. So chicken to try this!
all further questions to be directed to brooklynstyle. Thank you for your attention.
In all seriousness, would you consider leading a small brownstoner outing here for readers that are curious but intimidated by what it might involve? I know the place will very likely have beginner sessions but its always easier if the person you’re with knows what they are doing.
uhhh… i’ve climbed for about 10+ years and have worked in climbing gyms. women aren’t any better than men, it just depends on the route. men are better at “power” moves and women generally have better balance. in NYC, most of the route setters are men, so you get a situation where many of the routes are set for taller/power moves, so they can be harder for women. I’m 5’5″ and there are some routes that my husband (6’5″) can easily scale, but are anatomically impossible for me. Outdoors, the difference is less, because you can use any natural feature you can reach, whereas in the climbing gym, you’re artificially constrained to the plastic that someone sets.
G10, sounds like you are far from fat. Don’t worry – you won’t need to do unassisted pull ups for quite a few levels!
OMG, THIS IS SO COOL!
I’ve been missing one since moving to NY from SF 7 years ago. These gyms tend to have a small traditional work-out area, but who needs it when you can burn more calories trying to scale a wall.
BTW, women tend to do better than men (at same skill level) because they are more flexible. Needless to say, kids just fly up and down the walls.
YEAAAAH!
chicken – hahaha define slim
am 5’8 and about 155 – I go to the gym 3 times a week, work out with weights – but despite all that – I seem to have a hard time doing pull ups (unassisted) so was wondering would I get on this wall and just be stuck at “Peg #1” – hahaha
Ditto what the chicken said, plus, in climbing you are supposed to use your largest muscles to do the majority of the work that means pushing with your legs and using your arms primarily for balance and stability. It takes a bit of getting used to because we are so conditioned to climb by pulling, but once you master that its fun and challenging.
Definitely easier to do than rope climbing at the early stages. Harder later!
