The NYPD has set up one of its Sky Watch towers on Franklin and Lincoln Place in Crown Heights. The police at the scene explained it as a “giant box with cameras” to watch traffic speed and pedestrian activity around the area, though the last time one of these showed up on Franklin Avenue it was in response to “rash of shootings and other crime” in the area. Are you buying the traffic monitoring explanation? GMAP

  1. I seriously don’t understand the train of thought of those of you who have a callus attitude about crime.First you say the cops don’t do anything when people are being raped, mugged, etc. then when they do you say it’s a waste of time.Yet none have suggestions on what WILL work.

Rent is high as hell and it’s ridiculous that people have to choose between being able to eat and pay rent or just pay high Park Slope,BH or CG rents and DON’T eat.I live in a part of BRKLYN that just seems unsavory all the time. Not safe and the quality of life is just poor.

Yet my friends live in higher rent areas and are peacefully enjoying life. Those who live in Crown Heights, especially that street shouldn’t have to feel dread every time they have to leave their apt to go to the train. Assaults and other illegal activity shouldn’t just be “the way it is in Brooklyn” and some of you talk as if that’s it.Look people in the eye without being afraid eye contact means they’ll stab you in the neck with a pencil.

I can tell you this I’m headed back to the other side of the park, because it’s just more pleasant.

  2. Further proof of the crime problem in Crown Heights. Has anyone seen one of these in Park Slope, Carroll Gardens, or Brooklyn Heights? Has there ever been a need for these in those neighborhoods? I rest my case.

  3. “I disagree. Not sure if the setup is the same here…”

It’s not. Last summer it was just one officer in the pod.

Regardless, I’m not sure how to put a price on security and peace of mind. This doesn’t seem like a big deal to me.

  4. “However, I’d argue that this is a pretty effective use of time (one officer) and money (one already-made pod).”

I disagree. Not sure if the setup is the same here, but when they had one of these on Myrtle a while back I think there were 2 officers in the tower, one in a cruiser on the street (with the engine running, obviously) and another one or two officers in a huge truck across the street (also with the engine running, obviously).

  5. These set-ups provoke conflicting responses in me: “Wow, I must be safe under some kinda tight surveillance” vs “Wow, this place must be a war zone.” They have a certain hellish dystopian air about them, like some lesser Schwarzenegger movie…

  6. Wait, and if there is someone in the ‘box’ watching the streets and something happens whether traffic related or a crime, do they respond? I would think it would take them some time to climb down the thing to get the “thugs”
