Some people have all the luck. When this Greenwood Heights resident moved into her two-family house back in 2005, the back yard consisted of “a mess of concrete and brick featuring a giant dog house and what was advertised as a koi pond (essentially a hole in the ground, lined and filled with water and some goldfish).” After having some workers break up the concrete, she was starting from scratch. After getting one estimate of $35,000 to create the garden she wanted, she had to get more creative. This included applying to be the subject of a HGTV show called Urban Outsiders. After a five-month selection process, she got the thumbs-up. She had to pony up the $7,000 for materials but HGTV provided the labor and know-how. The result? Well, a picture’s worth a thousand words.

  1. 11:15…I had a deck built and there was a slab from the house out 12′ below it…and then another 30′ of garden. The deck was built to code extending 8′ from the house and the stairs went down off the back for about 4′ to a landing and then a right angle turn so that none of the plantable garden area was used. I’ll be sending this whole deck and yard landscaping to be posted in about a week after the rhodedendrons and hygrangeas are in bloom.

  2. Is there a reason everyone puts their deck stairs jutting out into their garden this way? I’ve always thought I would try to run it under the deck through a cut out and across the width of the building (fire escape style). That way it wouldn’t interfere with your garden. Maybe that’s just cause I lust after having my own dirt so I wouldn’t want to sacrifice any. Maybe once you have it you don’t feel that way.

Anyone know if there is something in the DOB deck regulations that leads people to arrange things this way?

  3. Agree more seating would be nice, more furniture actually – a little table, etc. But come on, guys, they were making her a garden, not furnishing it! She can always add what she wants for furnishings later…

  4. I thought I saw all episodes of that show, but I don’t remember this one. There was one done in n. slope. The host is adorable, but he has the most annoying laugh. He also has a bad habit of cementing in all the stone he lays.

Don’t see why they wouldn’t use that couch all the time. That comment makes no sense.
