Some people have all the luck. When this Greenwood Heights resident moved into her two-family house back in 2005, the back yard consisted of “a mess of concrete and brick featuring a giant dog house and what was advertised as a koi pond (essentially a hole in the ground, lined and filled with water and some goldfish).” After having some workers break up the concrete, she was starting from scratch. After getting one estimate of $35,000 to create the garden she wanted, she had to get more creative. This included applying to be the subject of a HGTV show called Urban Outsiders. After a five-month selection process, she got the thumbs-up. She had to pony up the $7,000 for materials but HGTV provided the labor and know-how. The result? Well, a picture’s worth a thousand words.

  1. “Well you could have googled dig and found it faster but I’ll do the work for you….”

Yeah, I could have, but I’m at work and just surfing this blog when taking a break from doing my actual job. It was much easier to ask you to do it, and you did. Good boy! Thanks.

  2. Well you could have googled dig and found it faster but I’ll do the work for you….

i’ll leave the website search up to you just to make it fun!!!!

  3. Too high. I paid $17k to Chuck at Dig and got 30′ of 8′ high cedar fence, stone walkway, trellissed area, raised vegetable bed (all cedar), moved a large apple tree, and a ton of plants plus…the front yard…cutout the concrete 5′ X 5′ and put in a 7′ tall holly plus planted the bed around the tree at the curb….and about 3 yards of mulch to cover it all

  4. What do people think of the original $35K estimate for the work. We’d like to do our garden which is starting from the same orignal condition as the Greenwood. Our garden is pretty big (32.5 ft by 50 ft) and is a total eyesore.

  5. Hi owner here …
In answer to some of your questions:
I love the garden, most of the plants have survived and is in season 2 of regrowing now.
They provided the couch but as some of you noted, I needed and got more seating. The deck comfortably seats 7-8 people.
As for why the deck was built this way … that was before my time but the house is only 12′ wide and the bathroom extension is about 6 feet wide. it would be awkward if not impossible to build the deck parallel to the house.
And for the design, I definitely got input, but because I am no plant expert I was pretty flexible with what I wanted, which was basically a lush space and a place to sit where the chairs wouldn’t sink into the ground. I also had say in the materials they used as I wanted stone as well as a wooden deck.
I’m really pleased with the way everything turned out. Thanks for your comments.

  6. 10:37 is RIGHT – it is a beautiful looking garden but I don’t believe that the setup is all that ‘user friendly’ – it looks more like a set than place that is inviting to hang out –
