A vandal has started fires on 6th Street between 5th and 4th avenues twice in the past week. Both incidents occurred on the street’s garbage nights, according to people who live on the block. Last Wednesday, someone ignited garbage bags and completely wrecked the Subaru shown above. The building next to the car was filled with nasty smoke for most of Thursday, according to a resident. And last night a similar fire was started, though it doesn’t seem to have resulted in property damage (see singed sidewalk on jump). “That’s two garbage nights in a row,” said someone who lives on the block. “Clearly it’s becoming a problem.” Clearly. 1. 11:36, what an ignorant response. I agree with B Squared, property damage can never compare to three lives being lost. I wasn’t aware of the fire in Flatbush. Car fires are definitely dangerous but house fires and the conditions that cause them are a much greater threat to human life which can not be replaced. You can always but another Volvo, Beamer or Saab!

  2. I’m pretty sure that the reason the tragedy in Victorian Flatbush was not discussed here is because this post is about something else. It’s not a personal affront to the people who died in the fire. Why not ask the folks who run this site to post something in more detail or include links in your comments to the numerous articles that are posted on line like this one: http://www.brooklyneagle.com/categories/category.php?category_id=27&id=15631.

I was there when the car blew up on 5th avenue…(at 4am) and while there is absolutely no comparison to the loss life in the house fire it was still scary and still something of concern for the neighborhood and the family who’s car was destroyed.

  3. Bob Marvin has a point–more smokers are indulging outdoors than ever before, yet one can walk blocks without encountering a trashcan. If I were skeptical I would say it has nothing to do with abuse–fewer cans = fewer cans which require emptying by DOS.

  4. I live on 6th b/w 4th and 5th our apartment has a roof deck we go up to occasionally. We happened to be up there on Friday night and saw a car on fire across 4th ave (6th b/w 4th and 3rd).

Called 911, watched it burn, and the FD show up to put it out and then bang on it with sledge hammers for a while. It was an exciting event for a group of drunks.
