Reader Ari Fliakos sent us his review of a brand-spanking-new eatery, and we just had to share:

“Finally! Petit Bassam, a new restaurant offering international fusion cuisine, has arrived on Lewis Avenue. Recently opening in the space formerly known as Lewis and Ruby’s, to the left of Bread Stuy, Bassam offers appetizers that include: Coconut Prawns w/ Avocado Beet and Heart of Palm in Caribbean Thai Sauce, Calamari w/ Diavola Sauce; Entrees such as Balsamic Apple Glazed Pork Chops ($12), Chicken Breast Roulade ($12.75), Seared Wasabi Yellowfin Tuna ($14.95), Fettuccini Carbonara ($12) and Vegetarian Lentil Shepherds Pie Casserole ($9). Currently serving beer and wine with full liquor license pending.

The atmosphere was welcoming, the service was excellent. The only complaint we had was the bathroom–seemed like a little bit of a renovation afterthought. Erin and I tried the Jumbo Lump Crab Croquette and the Mushroom Bisque Soup…both were absolutely delicious–truly. Hooked.”

Thanks, Ari!

  1. Hey!
Does anyone know the names of the owners of Kush on Putnam in Clinton Hill? I know they are brothers. One is the manager and the other is the chef. It’s an AMAZING place to eat if you haven’t gone.

  2. I’ve been to Petit Bassam a few times already and it is great. The food is tasty and the waitstaff is attentive. They take pride in the food they sell. The apple glazed pork chop and the lentil shepherd’s pie are amazing.

  3. Just came back from this place… did not like the food. The fettucine carbonara tasted like bottled sauce, noodles, peas thrown in and salmon flakes. No flavor whatsoever. It would’ve been nice to have some fresh ground pepper or red pepper flakes… I could’ve asked but didn’t but that’s my fault.

My friend had the salmon skewers which tasted like they had Ragu sauce, and some fried broccoli puffs which were pretty good. She also said the rice pilaf was good.

It doesn’t have its liquor license yet so it’s BYOB.

I am willing to go there again and try other dishes.

It was getting pretty busy on a Saturday night, the waitress was stressed!

The complimentary bread was subpar (glorified Wonder bread), and the herb infused olive oil was blah.

  4. I actually walked by Petit Bassam today — they have a separate vegetarian section on their menu — in addition to the shepherd’s pie, it included fettucine alfredo and at least one other dish. They also have a boef bourguignon version of the shepherd’s pie, a poulet roti (which they call poussin roti, which would be weird if it were true — roasted chick? I think you’d need several to make a meal — maybe this is dialect?), and a good seafood selection. Hope to try it out soon.

  5. Lots of place popping up in and around the area. Closer to CLinton Hill, there’s a new, hip-looking pizza place called Foccaciana (or something like that) and frnech-african Le Toukefoule (or something like that), both on bedford and one block from each other (all around Lexington). There’s also a bakery!!! It’s on Franklin and Greene, called Crumb Shop, or something like that. I could see cupcakes inside the window!(Sorry for being so vague, I was just cruisin’ around on my bike when I saw these spots and didn’t stop in…)

  6. Its true–there are three partners, one of them is an owner of Kush. The menu is not complete yet, but I have a copy and Ill post it later.

  7. Serious, Babs, Kush??!! I’m psyched! Does anyone know if they offer a decent vegetarian selection or is the Shepherd’s Pie the only thing?

  8. I hear the owners are the same people who own Kush. Incidentally, Petit Bassam is an island off the Ivory Coast. Can’t wait to try this one!
