The Observer has a Q&A with Al Laboz—chairman of the Fulton Street Mall Association and one of the strip’s big property owners—in which Laboz talks about new businesses like H&M coming to the corridor. He has this to say about the demographics stores are looking to cater to: “Now that downtown Brooklyn is experiencing a renaissance, with 5,000 new apartments being developed in a four-block radius, we’re getting a new type of highly educated … I’ll call them the Manhattan type of customer. And the challenge that we have on Fulton Street right now is really to keep our core local customer while also embracing the new customer that’s starting to come into Fulton Street.” Laboz also says “major, large-scale retailers” are eying 505 Fulton. Meanwhile, a reader sent in the photo above yesterday, which shows that work’s kicked off at the future home of the Shake Shack on the Fulton Mall—not a Laboz property, but certainly an example of one of the commercial corridor’s newcomers.

well i don’t go around demanding ridiculously overpriced shit and looking down on people who dont buy into the hype. yes im white, but im far from White-White. there’s a big difference. yes it’s nice to clean places up, but when it’s outright classism it’s kinda barfy to watch. anyway im not sure WHY i would even argue my points here as i am far from the targeted demographic of this blog, but someone has to make the counterpoints of why so much of what sites like this cream their 80 dollar panties over suck so badly!

hard to say, blofeld. Shopping 40/50 years ago even lower income people bought fewer but higher quality goods. Trend has been toward more quantity and lower quality stuff – this is across america not jut local.
There were very nice department stores on Fulton St. 40- 50 years ago.
“Seriously how many cell phone stores can a person go to????”
Apparently the answer is ‘however many are currently on Fulton St’ as those stores are still in business and seem to be doing just fine. And ‘dump’ is in the eye of the beholder.
the problem with “cool and mixed” is that it for the most part never stays that way for very long unfortunately! once the moonfaces they decide they want to settle in a certain area, it’s like there is no stopping them! im not being racial either, MF’s could theoretically come in every color of the rainbow i guess… the crux of the real problem really is upper middle class types who somehow magically turn 2 dollar ice cream into 20 dollar ice cream seemingly overnight. and overnight rapid gentrification is BAD.. very bad.

Its just amazing how people fee that Fulton Mall doesnt need to change. I really dont get it. The place has been a dump and is finally starting to look good. Seriously how many cell phone stores can a person go to???? Real business are coming that actually will take pride in their space and keep it in good shape. For instance look where Shake Shack is going the whole building looks like its been falling down for years, atleast we can say it wont look like that anymore.
