  1. On the other hand, the up-front costs of setting up a new ferry routes are relatively low, so I guess there is not great harm in the city trying out different options every few years.

  2. The population density around the 69th street pier is around 44,000 a square mile, which is not that high for Brooklyn. A few blocks inland it does go up a good bit, but a few blocks along the shore to the south it goes down a lot.

Based on times for the Staten Island Ferry, a trip to downtown would probably be more like 25 minutes, which is faster than the R but not the express buses (assuming average traffic).

I still stand by my prediction that ferries will never be successful internal to NYC without much larger subsidies than than the current bus/subway routes get.

  3. “As far as Bay Ridge goes, it seems like they have neither the density nor transit connections near the waterfront”

haha. Bay Ridge is dense (at least the people are). Across the 69th street pier is Shore Road which is lined with buildings. The surrounding area is a mix attached homes, and semi attached with a small splatter of free standing.
Um, people can walk to the pier AND there’s a bus that stops across the street.
I think if the ferry can get from Bay Ridge to downtown manhattan in 15 minutes people would be utilizing it frequently.

  4. The New Jersey to downtown ferries appear to be successful, although I know that at least some are subsidized by companies in the WFC and Jersey City waterfront.

As far as East River ferries go, it seems like the city tries to make them work every few years and it never succeeds.

As far as Bay Ridge goes, it seems like they have neither the density nor transit connections near the waterfront what would give ferries a chance at being successful.

  5. First of all, Scott, you’ve been very grumpy all week. Stop hanging out with Pete.

    B. I like ferry service. I have occasion to use the ferry service to New Jersey and find it faster and more civilized than the PATH.

  6. Why does South Brooklyn always get the shaft!

Sure, provide ANOTHER transportation option to nabes that already have a multitude of commuting options but not to a nabe with one freakin train. BRILLANT!
Guess people in Bay Ridge will continue to drive.

  7. Does CB10 really think they can shame people out of their curb cuts??? Putting an offender’s list on the internet will do a lot of good. i bet most people there who’ve had a curb cut for 20 years don’t even know what the internet is.

  8. Why do people keep getting so excited about ferry service?

Every single time it has been tried out within NYC it has been a huge failure, with the obvious exception of the Staten Island Ferry.

For the vast majority of trips it is both faster and cheaper to use the existing transit system.
