Hier Leit begraven, (Here lies buried) het lichaem van ( the body of) Jannetje Remsen huisvrouw van Aris Remsen (Jannetje Remsen wife or housewife of Aris Remsen) is overleden de 26 augustus (died the 26th of august)…..
Thanks Bx! Nobody would stop you if you tried it I am sure. I got no permits and took a big-ish film crew in there the other day to visit Basquiat and Boss Tweed.
Love the photo by the way. Does Greenwood allow people to make stone rubbings?
Thanks ENY. One would assume its the same Remsen family Bxgrl, given the date.
Is this the same Remsen the street is named after?
That’s a cool photo, Wasder. Nice job.
As I tried to read it, it almost sounded yiddish in my head. I think Minard and others are right – this is a Remsen grave.
Reminds me that I want to do more title history research on my house. Richard Berry, whose farm was subdivided to make the lots that include my house, was married to a Bergen.
Here lieth the grave of Liehaem van Janetae Remsen…pretty easy to read even if you don’t know any Dutch.
wasder, yes, exactly. “hier leit het graven” “here lie the graves” (graf = grave, graven = graves) of Mr Remsen, husband of Aris Remsen….
overleden (died) on…26 August, 177 (can’t really see the last digit due to the greenery but maybe 7.
