Not long ago we noticed construction workers gutting 190 Dean and beginning work on a restaurant in the lower level of the building. We didn’t know much about the restaurant but some more details have emerged in the meantime. The proprietor of “ArugulaArugular NYC” spoke to CB2’s Health, Environment, and Social Services committee to ask for approval of a liquor license at 190 Dean. The space is slated to be a Northern Italian restaurant with a “country farm ambiance.” Because there were no signatures of support or floor plans for the establishment CB2 tabled the proposal. According to the minutes of the meeting, there was also concern that the restaurant would disrupt the atmosphere of the quiet neighborhood, in the heart of the historical district. Any opinions from Boerum Hill residents?

  1. I asked this a couple of weeks ago, and maybe this is what Pete was getting at, but how can a commercial space operate here at an address that is zoned solely residential with no commercial overlay? Do they have to get a variance from zoning board?

(and yes i am sure that it was commercial at one point, but I have lived here a farily long time and I don’t think there has been anything commercially operated from here (with signage etc.) since at least the mid-1990’s. I just want to understand the mechanics of this.)

  2. I think this sounds great! Building on Bond has been a *great* addition to the neighborhood–despite the fact that a lot of its food is so-so, it’s just got a wonderful ambience and has really come to feel like an anchor of the community in a very short time. I hope this new place does just as well.

  3. Right – restaurant sounds like a great idea. Just like Building on Bond. And obviously, the building was built for a business. Completely contextual for the purists!

Owners of Arugula – visit the next BHA Board meeting (1st Tuesday of each month) or General meeting (date tbd) and tell the neighborhood what your plans are.
