Oaxaca Taqueria has already shuttered its Prospect Place location after opening in September. Crown Heights residents will now have to venture to the 4th Avenue or Smith Street outposts of the if they’re craving the mini-chain’s offerings. (It also looks like they just opened a new location in the East Village.) Guesses as to why it closed so soon? It was located on a sleepy block of Prospect and also wasn’t far from the popular Mexican joint Chavella’s. Update: The Oaxaca owners posted the following in the Comments section: “So all of you can stop guessing we closed Oaxaca on Prospect because the landlord had multiple building issues that finally caught up with him and they had Con Ed remove the electric meter for that part of the building. We decided that we did not want to stay there even if the issues were resolved. We really liked being in the neighborhood and are sorry that we could not continue at that location. We really appreciated all the support we got from the community. Contrary to some of the negative posts we were doing excellent business so we are looking for another location in the area.”

Also in response Acajou the food at all our locations is made fresh daily in our kitchen and delivered everyday to each store. Also there is not a single microwave in any of our stores and we do deliver. It is hard enough being a small business owner in NYC and people like you make it even harder. If we are such a perfect storm of mistakes how did we grow the business to four locations in less than a year? Maybe you should try running your own business in these economic times before making uninformed comments like yours.
Please come visit us at our other three locations.
Thank you
The Oaxaca Team
“There are some incredible Mexican places in NY, but they’re not especially cheap.”. Clearly you have never been to Sunset Park! Tons of delicious, trek-worthy, cheap Mexican food!
Fonda in Park Slope is incredible Mexican food. Just won an award for best Mexican in NYC.
There are some incredible Mexican places in NY, but they’re not especially cheap. The French Mexican spot in East Harlem, Barrio Chino on the LES, Hecho en Dumbo on the Bowery in the East Village.
There are also a few tasty tacquerias in Bushwick, but nothing worth traveling for. That spot near Northeast Kingdom is totally overrated. The one on Maria Hernandez Park is much better, as is Cocoyoc on Wyckoff (get the BBQ pork dinner).
the one on 4th, when it first opened up would stand outside the 4th ave union stop subway and give out menus all the time, to the point where it got slightly annoying tho, but i understand why they have to do that. again, totally underwhelming, taco bell had more flavor (yes i know it’s fake flavor, but sometimes a little fake flava is all that’s need to be truly satisfied)
*rob*
They didn’t market themselves enough- we love ordering in and have a scad of menus- nothing from them. Everytime a new place opens it gives out menus, hits the blogs, etc. Would love a good mexican place in CHN.
East New York, are we talking 5th Ave Brooklyn or Manhattan? 🙂
Neither is likely, but speaking as a non-driving CH resident, I would sure welcome more dining choices, especially eat-in, in CH.
M4L, are there a lot of available retail locations in the area? If so, maybe the landlord was willing to give it a shot with this guy and not make him sign a personal guarantee figuring that if he were willing to put some skin in by building out the location, he’d give it a serious go, and if it didn’t work, he didn’t miss out on a juicer deal. And maybe he got a free reno out of it.
Bad food. Plain and simple.
