The folks at PropertyShark sent us notice that they’ve unveiled a new crime statistics site that allows you to enter an address and view the corresponding crime stats for that precinct. So if you happen to live, say, near the laundry at 323 Flatbush, you can plug that in and find out that there have been 131 burglaries and 10 murders in that precinct so far in 2009; by contrast on the other side of Atlantic Avenue in the 88th Precinct there’ve been 117 burglaries and just two murders.

  1. I don’t always believe everything I read but two crime stats should give you some comfort. Murders are invariably reported as are car thefts(as you need a police report to collect on your insurance). A number of precinct captains are no longer there because they played games with the numbers-a few years ago. While conspiracy theorists abound no one has come close to proving that numbers have been intentionally cooked…

  2. Yeah, but these stats and maps are the worst things to make a decision on, as peteb points out one error.

Studies show that the more access there is to ,say, crime stats for your area, the worse you think crime is. This is why so many suburban people, fed a steady diet of TV crime news, think that crime is so bad near them.

  3. of course people will make assumptions of a certain blocks crime just by the precinct it is in.
As in – oh this is such a safe area because of low stats of precinct even though 80% of crime of the precinct maybe right here… or opposite – this area is so unsafe even though 80% of the crime takes place dozen of blocks south
    in same precinct.
