This just in from a reader whose doorbell was rung by the cops at 2 a.m. last night: “There was a mugging on Irving and Gates @ 1 AM and then a rape in the same area between 5-6 AM this morning. Seems like it was the same guy from the Classon and Fulton one a few days back.” You can see the Wanted poster here. Contact the Brooklyn Special Victims Unit Squad at 718-230-4418 if you have any information.

  1. quote:
People seem to think its the norm, and worse the police think its the norm.

but in the ghetto, it often IS the norm. as horrible as that is. im not saying the police can’t do better tho, im just saying that the residents committing these crimes need to grow the hell up and respect themselves and their community.

    *rob*

  2. I am living in Fort Greene for 2 years now – which is not long.

I think the police are very lax and turn their heads at all that goes around here.

There have been at least 3 shootings on Fulton – a rape on St Felix and a horrible slashing that was done to a 14 yr on his way to school on Fort Greene Place add to that a number of crimes in the park along with muggings. People seem to think its the norm, and worse the police think its the norm.

I agree that the 88th pct should be declared a Impact Zone.

  3. Noki, I know. was just saying those blocks are generally safe – these incidents are more the exception than the norm. Maybe ask your brother to wear a “Noki’s brother” sign – given your street cred’s, no one will mess with him

  4. “Anything written up on the shootings? I’d be interested to know where exactly they occured.”

ncarty–there was a shooting on Clinton Ave at Greene the other night that was reported on here. Think that is what people are referring to.

Colonel–excellent point about foot patrols. I never see them around.

  5. NCarty, these streets are fine, and life goes along for long happy stretches of time when nothing happens except for the teenagers who pick on one another stealing Ipods. I looked at crime statistics for 88 posted on this site a little while ago and the kind of crime you had was that, plus people who leave their cars open getting their radios taken out and people helping themselves to stuff laying around. Once in a blue moon, I would hear shots in the middle of the night. I live in Ft. Greene, around the corner from the drive by shooting the other night which freaked ME out. Weather is a factor I guess – a few good days brings out the unfullilled evil doers, I don’t know. Hopefully, the police crawl all over this neighborhood and this shit stops.

  6. it’s not as much every few months as it is the warmer weather every year…the vermin come out and more people (victims) are out and about. Every single person who’s reading this needs to e-mail everyone from Tish on up and call attention.

  7. Donatella, IF the 88th got more police, how do you think they should be deployed?

There is already a heavy police presence in FG/CH, but it is reactionary not preventative. The 88th relies primarily on car patrols. I see a lot of marked and even more unmarked cars driving around. Their strategy seems best suited for responding to crimes, not preventing crimes.

Personally, I think the 88th needs more foot patrols. The only time I see foot patrols is in early summer when the police academy graduates hit the streets in pairs to get a taste of the action.

Right now if you’re a criminal up to no good, all you have to do is look out for the police cars, marked and unmarked. They don’t have to worry about a cop sneaking up on them by foot. All they have to do is watch out for cop cars. For the criminally minded, it’s not too hard to spot 5-0 as roll down the block and it’s made even easier by the fact that most of these streets are one way.

  8. I wasn’t making any comment about the niceness or inherent value of the homes on some of these blocks. I was simply noting that my brother lives a stone’s throw from these three attack sites, which indicates to me that this miscreant lives fairly close by, and happens to be a gun-wielding sociopath. On the loose. I just don’t like it, obviously.
