Closing Bell: Camping in Brooklyn

A NY Daily News reporter received an unusual assignment-—go camping in Brooklyn. The location? Floyd Bennett Field in Marine Park, the only public campground in New York City. The campground is located off the shores of Jamaica Bay within earshot of JFK Airport. Amenities include a cooking ring, picnic table, communal woodpile, and pit toilets. Campers should bring their own food, water, shelter, and toilet paper. Unfortunately, in an average year, fewer than 1,000 people experience this “Brooklyn gem.” With money being tight, maybe this would be the best and cheapest alternative to that summer vacation.

BRG;
The wildlife refuge is in Queens 😛
Another point of going to the refuge is that it is on Broad Channel Island, which is more akin to a New England town than NYC.
In all seriousness you highfalutin Assheads, go to the Wildlife refuge.
Take the ‘A’ train and then it’s a 1/2 mile walk to the refuge. It’s a nice way to spend an afternoon, looking at nature right here in Brooklyn.

DH, we gotta get you one of those battery powered mini-fridges…keeps the beer cold and the campers happy 🙂
You eat horseshoe crabs, ditto??????
I would warn not to go to Jamaica Bay widllife refuge for winter geese watching – its awful cold. The horseshoe crab season and summer are better.
Are the pit toilets at least made by TOTO?
Where would I plug in my espresso machine?
If a hipster falls in the forest, would he spill his shot of Jameson?
At least if this guy gets lost, the pilots flying to JFK should be able to spot him by the reflection off his pasty legs.
haha snappy!
i’m more concerned about how to keep beer cold for a few days. might have to rough it with some nice red wine, or good bourbon.
I love the Jamaica Bay area. It is a hidden gem of Brooklyn. Years ago I had a friend who had a boat down there. When we were in the middle of the bay on his boat, you would never knew you were in NYC.
I second BRG’s endorsement of the Jamaica Bay wildlife refuge.
One of my dreams is that someday we get another Robert Moses around this town – someone who can get things done – and he takes on the burial of the Belt Parkway (even an open cut like Hicks Street would be fine), opening up this treasure to Brooklyn again.
haha very funny guys 😉
for the record i bathed last thursday.
