Closing Bell: The Goonies to Take Red Hook

One of our favorite things about summer in Brooklyn is that there is no shortage of free outdoor films across the borough. In addition to Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Movies with a View, we’re looking forward to checking out Red Hook Films on Tuesday evenings in Valentino Park. The free line-up, which was just announced, will kick off with the 80’s classic Goonies on July 13th at 8pm.

Thanks for the comments. We’re excited about the season. It’s a labor of love for everyone involved. But we’re pretty thrilled at how the neighborhood came together to revive the series on short notice.
Just to clear something up: Ikea didn’t outright refuse to participate. They were out of community-development funds for this year but encouraged us to apply for next year.
yeah that is cool info. and boo @ ikea for being a bunch of scrooges.

Great post! That is awesome when the community/local biz leaders pull together to make something happen.
The production designer for the Goonies was the same guy who designed Avatar : )
The L Magazine presents the 5th Anniversary of SummerScreen! @ McCarren Park
July 7 – Say Anything
July 14 – Labyrinth
July 21 – Romeo + Juliet
July 28 – Dead Man
August 4 – Starship Troopers (introduced by Richard Pena from the Film Society of Lincoln Center)
August 11 – Point Break
There are adult movies: Deep Blue Sea, Jaws . . . check the schedule.
Little behind the scenes info: even though the films in Red Hook have been happening for several years, this year they didn’t get funding from the Parks Dept. due to budget cuts, so some local residents got together and rallied neighbors and businesses and raised the funding themselves. As a result there’s some really cool things going on in conjunction with the screenings: The Lobster Pound is sponsoring Deep Blue Sea and they’re going to open for that evening and sell lobster rolls. Likewise Good Fork will be selling special box dinners the night of Cabin Boy. And Home/Made will be making gourmet popcorn and selling it down at the pier at every showing.
And tellingly, perhaps, while Fairway got on board immediately to help sponsor the series, IKEA did nothing.
i really wish they play some adult movies (im not talking porn here), just movies that arent kids movies. watching an old school friday the 13th or the warriors would be so great! but instead they play the goonies!?
