Red Hook’s waterfront was, as usual, perfectly serene this weekend, its steady harbor hum only interupted by the occassional passing car or another group’s chatter once the distance closed to about ten feet. This is pre-IKEA mania, scheduled to afflict New Yorkers June 18 (or, for the particularly touched, 48 hours earlier). Still, there were already men guarding all entrances, some who proudly declared they have turned down temptation from even the most beautiful ladies offering phone numbers and best friendship in exchange for quick look inside. So, after snapping a few pictures through the fence of IKEA’s expansive but unremarkable (aside from the obvious GIANT BLUE facade) campus, we rode away down the empty street toward Fairway Market. Radio music could be heard from the old security station in front of Thor Equities’ somewhat dismantled Revere Sugar refinery, but it could have been a decoy, there wasn’t anyone in sight. Beard Street’s lonely weekends will be over once IKEA is open every day from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. Above are some images of Red Hook pre-mania. If we can squeeze in without being clawed back, we’ll have opening day comparisons.

  1. who loves red hook? red hook?
are you mad? people love to shop and will drive to ikea to do just that. it could be in a neighborhood called purple hooker and it would not matter. as long as there’s free parking, we will be there.

  2. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again.

June 18th will be a sad, sad day.

One of the best parts of Brooklyn is about to lose its soul.

I cannot fathom how it is being supported by people who profess to love Red Hook.

  3. This will be a success because it will be so easy to get to. not only from brooklyn but also from that other boro across the water. the ikea folks really lucked out with this site. Only the urban shmutz who don’t own cars will have trouble getting there -which is actually another plus!

  4. 5:52 you are a woos. better stick to the bus. driving to that site coudn’t be easier, especially since it is the last thing before you hit water. you obviously are not very good at driving, ever have to find an address in the suburbs? now that’s a challenge!

  5. Was over in Red Hook this w/e. Still have no idea how drivers unfamiliar with the neighborhood are going to navigate the rabbit warren of streets. Never mind just crossing Fort Hamilton Pkwy to get into the area in the first place! What is the DOT thinking? This is gonna be a traffic nightmare.
