Tonight is the FGA Meeting devoted to schools, particularly a survey of public, charter, and private school alternatives for parents. The meeting comes after a hotly debated article in The Local entitled Don’t Leave District 13, Stay and Help. The writer, Michael Galinsky, writes that a parent he knew compared choosing a local school “to a prisoner’s dilemma… If she does what’s best for her child finding the best school, regardless of district she wouldn’t be doing what’s best for her community, and vice versa.” The conversation that follows weighs the options of school choices, considering the ways to improve public schools through the community itself. The meeting tonight is at 138 South Oxford Street, 7:15 p.m.

  1. i’m late to this – but to me the funny thing is that you all seem to be basically agreeing.

rob is pointing out that a lot of people do move places and then don’t go the the school

Mr. denizen’s kid does go to one such school

and heather and denizen seem to just be slightly missing each other’s point- and not realizing that the other one is basically saying the same thing-

    aren’t blogs fun.

  2. Heather – you find it shocking that my neighbors are poor? Not sure what problem you think I am describing. I love my kid’s school. And my neighborhood. The problem I have (which will never be addressed) is people like Rob (who is a constant troll on this site) accusing whole categories of people (a category which includes me and my friends) of racism and classism. My point was until he walks the walk I don’t really care to hear his talk. But as this thread proves I just have to return to my previous strategy of ignoring him.

  3. Putnam, I sincerely don’t understand why the situation you describe is a problem. I also think it’s a bit strange that you live… on Putnam Ave? And find it shocking that some of your neighbors are poor. It might be less strange if you held this view and were PPWdenizen. Maybe.

  4. I hope your children are picking up better reading comprehension skills than you, Putnam. You’re totally getting your knickers in a bunch over something that doesn’t apply to you.

  5. “Faux urbanites”? What are you, rob, the brooklyn Sarah Palin? Gonna tell us who the “real” urbanites are? Ugh. I suspect Putman has “ants in his pants” cause he is fed up with your brand of smug ignorance.

  6. Rob when you have your kid in a local public school which is 68% African American and Hispanic and where 49% of the students are eligible for free lunch, get back to me. But the fact I got pulled into your trolling is an example that I need to go back to school myself!

  7. quote:
Yet you term Rob’s accusation that the new “urban” (WTF?) parents somehow are running from those who don’t look like them as an excellent point?

uh, i dont need to have children to know that what i said is true.

newsflash: you new faux urbanites are doing more harm than helping.
