Closing Bell: Safe for Sukkot?
A reader sent in this photo he took this weekend of a building at Broadway and Walton Street with a question about the safety and legality of these balconies built for Sukkot. Anyone know if they’re on the up-and-up?

and if a ‘tragedy’ happens it wont be on the news.
personally i think these people have the right idea… i.e. do what the f*ck you want. because we only get one life.

I’m thinking I might ride by on a bike in a string bikini and ruin there “sukkot” celebrations….
these balconies are a tragedy waiting to happen…
obviously the people living in them have zero taste
obviously the people living in them can skirt around the law
but, even more obviously, WHO CARES!?! let people live like they want to live.
i thought this was a country that prided itself on living and let live type of thing?

File construction work with NYC Building Department, Get permits. What’s that?
Boerumresident put up the link for Zoning. Balconies are under 23-131.
Thanks, ET. Boerumresident posted the zoning code above. Anyone have an intern to write us a memo? 😉 In any event, you’d need permits for these things, right?
Here’s what the NYC Building Code says about Balconies.
“(3) BALCONIES. -Balconies, including railings and
supporting brackets, no parts of which are less than ten
feet above the ground or sidewalk level, may be
constructed to project not more than twenty-two inches
beyond the street line. When permitted by the
provisions of subchapter six of this chapter, fire escapes
that are part of a required exit may be constructed to
project not more than four feet six inches beyond the
street line provided no part, including any movable
ladder or stair, is lower than ten feet above the ground
or sidewalk level when not in use.”
If I remember correctly, Balconies are covered in the Zoning Codes, which is a different ‘animial’ – set of books than the NYC Building Codes. And I’m not in the mood to go thru them to get an answer.
I think the codes would be in this chapter:
