The Greenpoint Terminal Market was once the largest rope making factory in the country but was largely abandoned by the end of the 20th century. After a ten-alarm fire there in 2006, the remaining buildings now sit empty on the waterfront. Nathan Kensinger shares the building’s long history of fire in a recent photo essay, which explores the inside of the market. Suspicion arose over the 2006 fire, especially since a deal to sell fell through and some were interested in getting the buildings landmarked. But since then the future of the site has remained unknown. This is a nice glimpse into what stands today.
The Greenpoint Terminal Market Revisited [Nathan Kensinger]
they’ll sell it and the old structures are likely uninsured and the fire would have a hard time taking out entire site it is huge was the squatters this time….
Guttman bought the entire site for under $30M and if he had the property properly insured–with his record of “bad luck” with fire, why wouldn’t he?–he might own this free-and-clear and be able to wait until the right opportunity comes along.
this is development site, totally useless as is but for a handful of buildings, and will be torn down some day once development is finance-able sad but true
Very cool, as are all of Nathan’s photo essays.
