When we stopped by Gorilla Coffee at 97 Fifth Avenue in Park Slope, site of the infamous mass quitting, this morning, there was no sign of life inside the shop, but there was a sign from the owner promising to return after rebuilding her workforce.

  1. They better re-open! I have 9 punches on my card! My free drink will be something RIDICULOUS, that I can’t afford, that will give me a HEART ATTACK! And I will tip with 2 Canadian quarters!

And I’m looking forward to all of the inevitable “Carol is a bitch” and “Sappho wept” and “KD Lang fuels up at Ozzie’s now!”-type graffiti all over the bathroom walls!

  2. Mabye the employees weren’t friendly because they were miserable?

And it actually takes talent to make a great espresso – which is why a place like Starbucks now uses automated machines to make a consistently mediocre drink – they would rather have consistent mediocrity than bad – or uneven – drinks.

It always amazes me how cranky/angry/dismissive comment threads are, how many mind-readers there are on the planet, and how easy everyone thinks everyone else’s job is.

Making espresso is like making fries!
My kid could do that !!
Those dumb / lazy / etc. people should have done X instead of Y ! That would have made much more sense!!!

    yeesh.

  3. My husband and I went to Gorilla several times when we were in the neighborhood and on two occasions heard the employees talking shit about the owner. I was shocked at the time that they’d do that in front of customers but then I went back a final time and met the owner and it was pretty evident she was a really difficult character. The place was clearly a hot mess in every direction. For me the coffee wasn’t that good. Abraço and Blue Bottle kind of make it seem like a joke.

  4. “”barista community” give me a f’ing break.

you’re barely one step above someone working the french fry vat at mcdonalds.”

rob, funniest thing I heard all week…

Guys, you can’t just ‘form a union’. It hast to be certified by the NLRB, or you have to approach another union, to become a chapter.

They became a collective bargaining group and did what they could. I love it.

  5. yes, it’s a slightly version of Starbucks. Don’t get a french press, the grind is always wrong. The espresso is typically very bitter. Grumpy is better. Regular is slightly better (but tiny). Pedlar in Cobble Hill is far better. Tillies in Fort Greene is better. Unfortunately, here in the North we’re left basically with Ollies… uhm, sweet.

  6. “but the aesthetics of the presentation (different types of designs, little to no air bubbles, etc.) is definitely a skill that has to be learned from someone.”

For the average person, takes about two days to learn. At most
