Until there’s a law with some teeth regarding the undiscriminating dissemination of menus and circulars, it falls upon residents of buildings to fight the good fight by posting signs blocking junk mail on stoops and in vestibules. To that end, Green Fort Greene and Clinton Hill is coordinating a “No Ad” sign blitz of Fort Greene and Clinton on April 24th (two days after Earth Day). The goal is to post 1,000 of the signs around the two ‘hoods. If you’d like to get involved, please contact brian.bohan@gmail.com.
pellet gun works even better than a sign. just sayin’.
I have nothing against coupons. Its a matter of choice. To lambaste people who don’t want junk-mail is retarded. The “local businesses…that give the neighborhood its flavor” are Pathmark, Office Max and Lowes in the packets that I used to get.
Forbiddenplanet we are totally in agreement with you. These signs have been around for at least two years and they are small, completely benign, and very efficient. We’ve had them for about a year now with a huge success rate….except for the occasional locksmith card.
The flyers and circulars generate massive amounts of waste on a daily basis making this one small sign very tolerable.
DIBS are you being serious?
“You enter and leave your house at least once a day. just pick it up and toss it out”.
Don’t you think it is environmentally irresponsible and ethically bankrupt to keep throwing away flyers and circulars daily…
ditto to you likes2lurk. It’s not about the inconvenience of needing to pick up and toss garbage but one of wasteful and environmentally inefficient advertising.
I cautiously raise my hands as a coupon-clipper and looker-at-supermarket-sales-flyers.
I hate these signs. The urban equivalent of yelling at kids to get off your lawn.
Of all the hassles of owning a home, picking up a few pieces of paper once or twice a day is negligible. I’m lucky to have a job that a) pays me enough to afford a house, and b) does not require me to canvass the neighborhood for customers. Why should I begrudge the local businesses, who give the neighborhood its flavor, in their effort to stay afloat?
I’ve had one for a year. They’re small and unobtrusive and they work!
Its not about the effort it takes to throw the bags of advertising away – its about waste. I personally don’t want these ads. I also get myself off of junk-mail mailing lists and have reduced the 5 catalogs a day I was getting to 1-2 a week.
The negative reaction on here surprised me. If you want to keep getting the advertising then by all means don’t use these signs! To lambaste the effort is retarded.
My only issue is car service business cards stuck ON MY CAR!
I’m definitely on board and I will hang one of these on my gate. I am so sick of these endless streams of paper – We get bombarded daily with cards, coupons, circulars, etc and it drives me crazy. Thanks to whomever is organizing this!
My first job ever was distributing flyers for Urban Outfitters. I think I was ten.
